You'd be surprised what butterflies eat.
Some adult butterflies eat mud, dung and rotting fruit. Not just flower nectar.
People need to know that there are many different butterflies with different dietary requirements for their larva.
I posted a site below that outlines the info about the diet of the larva and adults.
The other site tells how to "save" the butterflies since the natural habitat is being destroyed.

I assume butterflies are:
beautiful
graceful
don't carry diseases like house flies
migrate
fragile
get pins stuck in them hopefully after they have died
