I believe it was hundreds of years ago when to improve the family lot the family of a female would seek potential husbands for her hand, then it turned around and females had to have a dowry and men would ask for her hand to improve his lot

it is biblical. when one would desire to marry the man would go and speak to the father or whomever was the patriarch to marry the young lady; however this did have some drawbacks... if she was not the oldest you may not get to marry her unless you married the older sister first.(example jacob had to marry rachel's sister leah to get her)
