The spelling system of English was created a long time ago, back when the pronunciation was different. The pronunciation has changed since then, but the spelling has remained the same. So now they don't match.

Why is the first "o" in Tonto pronounced "aw"?
The simple answer is that English a horribly constructed/developed language. It has a tremendous number of exceptions to the "rules". Italian, in contrast, has very strict rules with very, very few exceptions. Each letter in Italian is almost always pronounced one, and only one way. It is a miracle that we can communicate at all, and shouldn't surprise anyone that the world is full of misunderstandings arising from communication through language. The courts are full of people arguing exactly what was meant by what someone said or wrote, often that being the laws themselves.
If computer programming languages were as unstructured and lackadaisical, etc., few people (fewer than now) could ever master them and secondly, computers would produce incorrect results or stop functioning altogether almost every time you tried to do something because the instructions would be ambiguous or not make any sense at all. Novice programmers find it difficult to use an unforgiving language, but the alternative is much worse. I would like to see a world body either create an entirely new language or else correct all the flaws in English.

English does not always follow phonics rules. Some words have to be memorized. There is no other explanation.
