Add 7 to both sides:

4k - 7 + 7 = -7 + 7

4k = 0

Divide by 4:

k = 0

There's an algebra teacher's trick: if the class seems to understand something pretty well, give them a problem where the answer is 0. For some reason, that throws about a third of the class into conniption fits. Don't let it worry you - just follow the standard procedures and accept what comes out. Zero is a perfectly valid answer.
