Having read the answers to this question so far,i find it incredible that people look for an excuse to smoke. Why cant you smokers just admit that you do not have the willpower to give it up?Yes you can get lung cancer if you do not smoke, you can also die in a car if you do not drive, die by drowning if you can swim etc. We are told that smoking INCREASES your chances of getting lung cancer but the majority of people who cannot quit will not admit that this is so.If you are a smoker and you are annoyed at the smoke free areas which are now becoming widespread, then tough! Why the hell should non smokers in public places have to suffer all the crap you blow out?

My mother has smoked since she was 14, she is now in her 50's... She's already had cancer, but she had rectal cancer, survived, and is now in remission.. When the doctors told her she needed to quit smoking, she replied with why do you think I stuck the cigarette in my *** and smoked it!!! The Dr's could give no medical evidence that proved and of my Mother's health problems came from smoking...
\
And my father also smoked that long, he had prostate cancer, and guess what he wound up passing away after being in a coma because the Dr's messed up a simple surgery!!
There are plenty of non smokers who develop lung cancer, researchers are saying it's because of pollution..
I don't think you can decrease you chances of getting any kind of cancer, if your suppose to get cancer you will no matter what..

and drinking increases the chances of getting liver diseases; living in a city increases the chances of developing asthma; crossing the road increases the chances of getting hit by a number 7 bus etc etc. People take what they believe are calculated risks - whether it be because they don't believe they'll be one of the unlucky ones, or because they are willing to take that risk. The problem is with cigarettes and alcohol that you can become addicted and then you are not in control anymore. Cigarettes are more addictive than most illegal drugs - something I never realised when I first puffed on a ciggie at school many years ago; once people have started it isn't that easy to give up and stay a quitter - it's serious cold turkey. But your argument could be applied to so many other things that it dilutes the realities - that each ciggie I have I am sucking in all sorts of chemicals that are actually far nastier than the tar and nicotine, in fact every time I've bought fags on holidays I've added asbestos to that nasty list as it is still used in the filters in some countries. But poor diet, too much alcohol, not enough exercise and so on can cause so many differend diseases: heart disease, strokes, impotency, cancer etc etc which is why the mantra "a little bit of everything" is probably the best to live by.

my mom died 2 days ago. she smoked for 35 years and was healthy then she quit smoking and her health went to sh*t. my brother-in-law has brain cancer (not lung) he smokes. my wife has ovarian cancer (not lung) she smokes. my aunt (moms sister) has cervical cancer and has never touched a cigarette. I'm beginning to believe we are all going to get the big C no matter what we do. we breath foul air and drink chlorinated water and not to mention all of the chemicals we eat with our food.

I used to smoke so I can freely answer this. Nothing bothered me,I didn't care if I was killing my self and the rest of the population, not that it mattered anyhow..........polution is just as bad. You kill yourself every breath you take so smoking is just killing you faster. I quit smoking September 2005,I have been ciggerette free for a whole year and DAMN IT FEELS GOOD!!!!.

Two of my brothers died from smoking, and I hate smoking with a passion. Being a smoker is like having "stupid" tattooed on you forehead.

does it bother you that every time you drive your car you put more garbage in the air than a smoker does in a lifetime? And those pollutants are far more dangerous that tobacco smoke...yet people wouldn't think of life without their precious internal combustion engines.Whats one more risk factor? There are no guarantees in life...you could die tomorrow, so why not enjoy the things you like? including smoking?

When people stop telling me to give up, then I may think about it. As for cancer. I know a lot of people who have had cancer and none of them smoke. If you are gonna get it, you are gonna get.
Passive smoking. What a load of bull.

No. Should it? I have made a lifestyle choice. Us smokers already get herded in to grotty 'smoking zones' and are persieved as the 'dirty unsociable ones'. Do I ask you questions such as "Does it bother you that getting in to a car increases your chances of being in a car crash?". There is no need.
