One cannot usually see the inside of our eyelids because the eye uses LIGHT as a catalyst for the optic nerves.
You can TRY using a flashlight, shining into your eyes, (through the eyelids) but because the flesh of the eyelid is (optimally) so thick, and the pupil is (ultimately) sensitive, all light is blocked.
ALTHOUGH, if you visit your Optometrist for an eye exam, they should dialate you pupils so they will stay open. - When your pupils stay open, you should be able to "see" inside your eyelids.

Because noone was ment to,if someone told you that they saw the inside of their eyelids they lied to you. Now,I think the reason for this is so it would be completely dark for sleeping, also helpful to others when they tell you to close your eyes so you can't see anything...... This is a good question though.

When your eyes close, the muscles around your eyes move down. Find someone sleeping (very soundly) lift the eye lid and see how the eye is "looking" down.
