Because there are no candidates running that represent the views of most of the non voters. For example if you were a democrat and there were only republicans running what would be the point in you voting?
This is a problem I face all the time when the elections come around. I am libertarian but we all know the only ones that have a chance of getting in office are either republicans or democrats. Most of the time those are the only 2 choices you find come election time.

The excuses people give are things like "My vote doesn't matter" or "I don't know what any of them stand for" or "It doesn't matter who gets elected" or "All politicians are crooks anyway." None of which are good excuses. I registered to vote as soon as I was 18 and I have voted consistently over the many years since. I work as an election judge and I am deeply moved by the many older people who make it a point to vote in every election, even though they can barely walk to the polling station. The young people MIGHT show up for a presidential election, but many choose to blow off the whole process. If you vote, the people you vote for may or may not be elected, but at least you participated in the process. You never really know when your vote will make a difference.

Some people think it is too much trouble. Some don't care. Some think it is a waste of time. Others don't vote because they don't know what or who to vote for. Forgetfulness, laziness, and bad attitudes about the process keep many people from voting.
It is sad that people do not realize what a privilege the right to vote is.

I think the main reason is that even though you are told that your vote makes a difference, people don't believe it. Take the presidential elections for instance...the actual process takes place in the electoral college. But these are based on how the state votes. People think that it won't make a difference in how they vote, or if they vote, because the decision isn't based off of what they think. What they don't realize is that if they don't vote, they can't complain when the one who wins isn't who they want, because they didn't take part in the process. If anyone is reading this, your vote DOES count, and don't think otherwise.

Sadly..i don't many people choose not to vote..they just don't bother to...I can respect someone that has a legitimate reason for not voting but have no respect for someone who uses lame excuses like..they are all the same...all crooks etc...I find that usually translates into ...its too much bother for me or i am too ignorant to take the time to understand what each party or politician stands for.

I think people feel that 1 vote doesnt matter. Maybe even some look at the electoral college and really wonder why their 1 vote will even make a differance

Because after they vote, many often feel like their vote doesnt matter and are disillusioned. People feel like Government will do what it wants regardless of what the people want or need.

Mostly, laziness and "my vote doesn't even count, what's the point." And it's usually those people who ***** and moan the loudest when they get someone in office they don't like.

because they have no pride in their country and don't want to have a say so!
people who don't vote shouldn't have a right to ***** about anything!
not voting is un-american! unless you have a damn good excuse! and there are few good ones!
it's our God given right! we should be proud to vote!
