to play wahts on the radio you need about 3 or 4 chords honestly. but your a guy so i would recommend going to a music store and taking lessons. it may seem real boring and slow at first but when you have someone to show, do, correct you will learn much faster and you will learn the proper way before you figure out your own way to play. many many musicians are self taught if you have the time and determination no one will be able to tell where you learned. but just easier depending on who you are to take lessons.

i learned the guitar mostly by myself, i would recommend that if you know someone who plays, he/she can teach you the major chords and the minor chords then you can practice it yourself, familiarize yourself with how the chords are played then you can start with the strumming, which actually comes, when you start learning to play a song, you might find it difficult to shift chords as you play the song but eventually you will learn how to shift the chords in timing with your strumming pattern, once you learned the major and minors then you can start to learn the major/minor seventh, so forth and so on, learning the guitar is hard work, it needs a lot of patience and time, plus your interest to learn is the biggest factor. it may or may not take you long to learn as this depends on how dedicated you are...goodluck

the good thing about a guitar is that you can get something out of it almost straight away. So you can teach yourself some chords and start strumming etc within a week and..... at the same time get some lessons. It's not like a piano or violin or flute where you just sound like sh%t for the first couple of years!!!!!

Do you KNOW someone that plays? I bet they wouldn't mind showing you the basic chords, and then you could probably figure out everything else yourself.

I just typed in 'self taught guitar' on the web search and there is a guy waiting on the above
site- just sitting there, smiling, holding the guitar and waiting! Good luck. I know you will be great!!

The best course is to go to a qualified teacher but you must put time and effort into practising. You can be self taught but again practice makes perfect. You can not determine how long it will take it depends on the individual.

it would take you a while to self teach, i play guitar and i took lessons for about 2 years after i quit i started to learn songs and I'm in a small garage band with some of my friends. i would recommend starting off with a few lessons to get started at least.

PLAYING THE GUITAR IS A TALENT , GIVEN TOO YOU , SOME LEARN REALLY QUICKLY AND OTHERS LIKE ME TAKE AWHILE , ONCE YOU LEARN THE BASIC CHORDS THEN THE REST SHOULD COME EASILY , BUT IT TAKES LOTS AND LOTS OF PRACTICE , IF YOU ARE SERIOUS ABOUT IT I WOULD SUGGEST GETTING A MUSIC TEACHER I HAVE BEEN TRYING FOR MORE YEARS THAN I AM WILLING TOO ADMIT . BUT MY FIRST COUSIN PLAYED PROFESSIONALLY WITH RALPH STANLEY AND RICHY SKAGGS AND KEITH WHITLEY , UNTIL HIS DEATH

two hours a day, by yourself, two months. that's just for starters. you will learn more as you keep playing for years to come. get with some friends and they could teach you a lot. good luck.

i guess you can look at a book just to learn the strings...then, you can practice and practice and practice and practice and practice, etc. then you could get music books to play songs and then you learned?

i want to learn how to play too but i dont want to get a teacher either, but i think my method will work. if not, you should use another method
