bill russell was a winner in grade school, high school, college and the nba....maybe its because he belongs to the era long time past but these people who think of others as the greatest never bother to look up russell's winning accomplishments.... and to those of you who chose chamberlain, you might want to check how russell dominated their encounters to wilt's frustration and you have the gall to choose wilt over rusell?....11 rings in 13 nba campaigns says it all and he even played in 12 finals....no player ever has ever achieved 12 finals in 13 seasons and to say no one will ever again is a safe bet....being great should never be about personal records, flashy plays, or scoring many points...it should be about winning and there is no bigger winner than the great Bill Russell

That is a question that is argued about by several people in the world. The first question you should ask youselves is who does the best job of scoring for a center. The answer to that question is Wilt Chamberlin and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar for obvious reasons. The next question that shoud be asked is what center has the best defensive talent and defensive stats. The best defensive stats and talent both belong to Bill Russell, who also has the most rings making the old sports adage true "Offense wins seats, defense wins Championships." The last question is which center has the most stats that a center is supposed to have (blocks and rebounds) Hakeem has the most blocks and Chamberlin has the most rebounds. The overall conclusion is that there are very good centers but the inarguable best are these six (I know I only mentioned four, but I'll get to the fifth and sixth one in the list)
1. Wilt Chamberlin (offense)
2. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (offense)
3. Bill Russell (defense)
4. Hakeem Olajuwon (defense)
5. Ben Wallace (4-time defensive player of the year)
6. Dikembe Mutombo (the other 4-time defensive player of the year)

I honestly with out a doubt would pick Hakeem Olajuwon or Wilt Chamberlain look at the stats:
Olajuwon is one of four to have a quadruple-double
18 points-16 rebounds-10 assists- 11 blocks
He was the ultimate player, a mix a power and finesse. He had footwork thats still unmatched by anyone his size.

Wilt Chamberlain
we all know about the 100 points and the 50.4 and 22.9 per game averages. but he did big things. when you say triple-double people think of Oscar Robertson but will has the most consecutive triple-doubles. From January 8, 1968 to January 20, 1968 he recorded a triple-double in 9 straight games.
The most rebounds in a game (55).
Chamberlain holds nearly 100 NBA records, but one poeple don't know about is that Chamberlain is the only player to have a double-triple-double vs Detroit (22 pts, 25 reb, 21 ast)
quadruple double-double vs L.A ( 78 pts, 43 reb)

Wilt Chamberlain. The only center, or player for that matter to score 100 points in a game. But I do think Olajuwon was a truly great center in his prime. I unfortunately only got to see him fading away on the Toronto Raptors.

I would say in modern era - (last 30 years) Shaq has been the most dominate player, but his dominance only lasted a few years (about 5 years). Early in his career he sucked in the playoffs, then towards the end he got out of shape. But during his 3 final MVP's - (especially his last two) - he was the best center and tied for best player ever with MJ.

But overall I would have to say Kareem was the best cause of the championships and long and quality career he had. Kareem stood in shape and had longevity. Olajuawon would be tied for second with Patrick Ewin.

Wilt Chamberlain and Bill Russell were the most dominant centers of all time. The only other centers who come close are Kareem and Shaq.

Wilt Chamberlain was proabaly the most dominant in terms of scoring and overall stats. The guy AVERAGED 50 points a game during one season!!!
But for the dominance of his team and the number of championships he won, then I would go for Bill Russell.
