My son was born 3 yrs ago and the bill was over $9,000.00 dollars for a 2 night stay in the hospital and a vaginal birth. This time around just my doctor fees while seeing the doctor during the pregnancy is almost $5,000. I am fortunate enough to have an uncle in the practice in which i use so i do get a family discount which made my part almost $1700.00 or so and insurance was billed the rest. I havent been to the hospital yet so i am not sure what that will run this time.

If they don't have medical insurance coverage to pay for the delivery, yes. Or if they do have coverage, then they have to pay for what the insurance company does not pay for (deductible, copay/coinsurance, etc). We do have state assistance for people that qualify, who are of lower income limits. State assistance is where the state pays for your health insurance.

Medical services are not free. Hospitals need to be paid, or they will go under and they will close down. Doctors need to be paid, every person in a hospital needs to make a living and therefore shouldn't work for free.

I don't see it as a bad thing that we have to pay for our medical costs. We pay for things such as clothing, food, and shelter, don't we? The farmers need to be paid. The retailers need to be paid. Everyone needs to make a living, to support themselves & their families. So of course, if a doctor spends all that time in school and learning how to save lives - I would gladly pay for someone to help make sure that I and my children have lives to live.

yep-and even with insurance it costs $1000+ (including regular dr visits). After the first $400 i pay, my insurance pays 80% of the bills. and after i have paid (from my 20% responsibility) $2000 within one calendar year, they will pay 100% of the bills for the rest of that year. so i guess with my insurance, in theory the most i would have to pay per yr., on healthcare is $2400. good thing i got pregnant in february!!! - the whole pregnancy, delivery, and first batch of check-ups and shots for the baby will be in the same year!!

Yes, we pay, and as most have told you already, if you don't have medical insurance it's quite costly but it's the best money you'll ever spend. Worth every penny.

Really??! Geez that is tight. Here in Australia you dont have to pay a cent to have your baby born, even without medical cover.

Yes. We have insurance and it still cost us money...years later, we're still dealing with the billing issues. Ain't free market medical care grand?

If you don't have insurance you have to pay.
That said most American insurance coverages
charge a co pay as well. So they may pay up to $100
or more.
