There is no way to define the exact job of a business consultant. There are too many different types of business consultants and too many specialties to define the job.

A consultant serves one of two major functions:
1) To teach a person inside a business how to do something they do not know how to do
2) To accomplish a task for a person in a business that the person does not have the time to do

One thing a consultant should NOT do is to do accomplish a task for a person that doesn't know how to accomplish the task themself without teaching that person how to do it themself.

A good consultant is first and foremost a teacher.

Business Consultant--from my understanding...
They are the person(s) giving advices to the owners of the business. My friend is a consultant and what he does is when there are new products to be brought out in the market the owners ask him if this certain product will be high rocketed in the market and stuff like that. He also handles the customers' complaints and advices the management how to solve problems or complaints.
On my opinion, its a kind of complicated job... Decision-Maker kind of job.

My wife used to work for a rehabilitation firm. Basically what they would do would be to take people who had been injured on the job (workmen's comp. cases) and put them through a training program to learn a new trade, if they were not able to return to their usual and customary occupation due to physical injury. Some of the injured workers would opt for a self-employment plan. In this case, their self-employment plan (say for example they wanted to start their own gardening service, mobile carwash, etc.) would then been sent to a business consultant. It was the consultant's job to decide if the plan was a viable one or not.

Say you are a busy executive, and you need to know what time it is.

You hire me (business consultant) to come and look at your watch to tell you what time it is. Then I take your watch as a form of payment.

Now anytime you want to know what time it is in the future, you have to call me.

Ha -

To be the well-paid scapegoat for things that management wants to do but doesn't want to get blamed for.

To state the obvious but impolitic.

To bear the burden of liability for a company.
