they want it so they can charge your account after the 7 days. Stay away from free 7 day trials as they will automatically charge you a fee because they have small print that requires you to cancel way before the 7 days. It is a slow process getting you card charged back

The credit card is used for identification purposes so that people won't be able to abuse the free trial. Usually in a 7 day trial the card isnt charged or it may be charged something nominal and then immediately refunded.

Usually unless you cancel before the seven days are up they will sign you up for a year's subscription. If you don't cancel that before the year is up, another year gets taken out of your credit card, etc etc

if they are less "honest" than that they will charge lots of stuff on your card and you will spend years trying to sort that out.

I don't understand it, but this is a way those companies use to make money of your money. supposed that your trial period if for seven days as you said, you pay $50 to try a product.
1- they have to money in case you domage the product
2- they use that money to make investment and they probably make more than 100% depeding of the market. Those are the tricks and ideas behind trial and free trial.
3- A way they can get there money in case you forget to cancel before the trial is over.

Think of yourself as the seller. You're selling to a stranger. There's no guarantee you'll get your product back. Some people will rip you off. Some people have no way to pay even if they like the product.

It's just good business sense to take a credit card as "security".

This is not sleazy. It's smart. It's common practice. It's done by
any business person with a brain.
