I don't play guitar but I know that to get really good, practice, practice, practice !!! I take ballroom lessons & have been for the past few winters. I still don't know all of the dances yet. I don't feel that I'm a very graceful dancer.... YET. Also, I'm taking hip hop lessons now. I've only had 2 lessons. The more I practiced, the better I got. I also feel that I'm able to "feel" the music & make up my own dance moves. So when I go to a club in the city next wk I'ma practice my dance moves. I don't wanna do it here where I live cuz 1, I don't really have anyone to dance w/, 2) I'm shy to dance freestyle, esp since there are specific moves that involve turning, jumping, going on the floor, (in this particular dance we're learning) etc. I should practice tonight even but I don't know if I have the time to. I shouldn't even be on YA's right now... cuz I'm tryna get ready to go home b/f going to the city. I have to clean my place first... work tmw all day :s :( Prob only go home on Sat... Try not to get discouraged if someone says something negative to you. I'm sure your grandma woulda had a hard time getting good too. As long as you're having fun, then hey, who cares how long it takes to get really good ? :)

I started when I was 12 and had an audience by the time i was 15 but i didn't peak until i was about 20. I'm 50 now and forgetting some of what i've learned. It depends on your comittment to learning. You have to get sore fingers and learn to live with them. If you're determined, you could be pretty good before H.S. graduation. Practice EVERY day. As your fingers become sore, you should keep on practicing. After the soreness goes away, you will be able to consentrate better. Therfore learning faster. Don't quit, no matter what. Make Grandma proud.

Anything that is worth your time is going to take time to develop skill. If your dedicated you can get relatively good within a year or 2. Of course for that you will have to work very hard. If your impatient and not willing to put too much into the craft dont waste your time...
When it comes down to it, any art form is only attained through a series of lessons failures and successes. You be good and play pop songs within a few months, but if you want to develop the ability to actually "wow" people then buckle down and realize that it might take some time. It depends on your talent level, your practice habits, and the quality of instruction you get. There are 6 year olds who play musical instruments like virtuossos. There are people who have been playing for years who suck. There is no specific way to answer this question.
Besides, you didnt define what you mean by "good". "Good" in the 80's was much better than today. 80's guitar music was difficult, influenced by Eddie Van Halen, Yngwie Malmsteen, Steve Via.. Today's music is more about mood and marketing, and today's "guitar heros" are pretty lame. That all started with Kurt Cobain. He could barely play at all.

We're talking about your fretting hand, right? The basic answer would be NO - your finger tip has to contact the string and the fret board to get a clean sound. Even a slightly long nail ends up digging into the fret board. However, I have seen some ladies hold their fingers flat to avoid the nails - they can't play well, but they can play some basic chords. I think that's what Dolly does.

It takes time, if you practice everyday your progress happens faster. You can always play guitar better so its almost like, how good do you want to get?
If you play for years, you'll shred. Unless you have no talent what-so-ever. You have to at least know timing by ear.

it's different for everyone, but since you took lessons when you were eight, it will be easier for you. it might take a bit longer than you hope, but you have past experience, so it will come more naturally for you.
unfortunately, i tought myself how to play by ear with an untuned guitar, so i can't really reteach myself easily.
