I've provided references many times, and have never received or expected a gift in return, or even thought about it until your question. You are however expected to get permission from the person before giving their name as a reference. It's always nice to hear from the person afterwards letting you know if they got the job. A thank you card with a note is sufficient.

A gift certificate to a nice restaurant is always well received. You didn't mention if the person was in another city. This works well because you can get gift certificates to chain restaurants in other cities. If you want to do a little detective work, you can even get gift certificates to restaurants that are unique to the home city as well.

A card should be appropriate and be specific in the reason why you appreciate the recommendation. If you want to purchase a gift, keep it to a minimum... a small plantm simple bouquet of flowers, or a small box of chocolates... nothing to outlandish or garish.

How about a subscription to a magazine that relates to the field they are in. Most of them allow the sender to include a short message so you could thank them over and over (well at least until the subscription ran out) but in a subtle way.

For some reason, giving people a Cross pen is usually a nice gift.
It's respectful and classy.
Good luck!

a small fruit basket with a thank you card, or a small bouquet of flowers with a thank you note or write a thank you note yourself that would mean a lot more than you think and it comes from th heart.
