Hey. Are you sure it was The Beatles? What you described as the lyrics kind of sounds like "Dancing Bear" by The Mamas and The Papas. Here's the "official" lyrics:
I wouldn't want to be a chimney sweep
All black from head to foot
From climbing in them chimneys
And cleaning out that soot.
With a broom and ladder and pail,
The darkened walls I scale -
And far..and high...I see a patch of sky.
I'd rather be the GYPSY
(I'd rather be the GYPSY)
Whose camped at the edge of town -
(Camped at the edge of town)
The one who has the dancing bear
That follows him around.
And he lifts his big foot up;
He puts his big foot down
And bows...and twirls...
And dances 'round and 'round.
I found I was a cabin boy last night as I did dream -
Bound upon a magic ship for a land I'd never seen.
And the moon she filled our sails;
And the stars they steered our course;
And on our bow there was a golden horse.
The queen eats fruit and candy; the bishop nuts and cheese
And when I am a grown man, I'll taste just what I please -
The honey from the bee, the shellfish from the sea,
The earth, the wind, a girl, someone to share these things with me.
I wouldn't want to be a chimney sweep, etc...
(I'd rather be the GYPSY, etc...)
(I dreamed I was a cabin boy, etc...)

A Day in the Life? That song is two songs in one. Or it could be what is refered to as the Abbey Road Medley, which consists of the following songs:
Mean Mr. Mustard
Polythene Pam
She Came in Through the Bathroom Window
Golden Slumbers
Carry That Weight
In the End
Hope this helps. Good luck with your search! :-)

Was it "A Day in the Life"? It seems like two different songs:
I read the news today oh boy
About a lucky man who made the grade
And though the news was rather sad
Well I just had to laugh
I saw the photograph.
He blew his mind out in a car
He didn't notice that the lights had changed
A crowd of people stood and stared
They'd seen his face before
Nobody was really sure
If he was from the House of Lords.
I saw a film today oh boy
The English Army had just won the war
A crowd of people turned away
but I just had to look
Having read the book.
I'd love to turn you on
Woke up, fell out of bed,
Dragged a comb across my head
Found my way downstairs and drank a cup,
And looking up I noticed I was late.
Found my coat and grabbed my hat
Made the bus in seconds flat
Found my way upstairs and had a smoke,
Somebody spoke and I went into a dream
I read the news today oh boy
Four thousand holes in Blackburn, Lancashire
And though the holes were rather small
They had to count them all
Now they know how many holes it takes to fill the Albert Hall.
I'd love to turn you on

Are you sure you're not thinking about a Beatlish song by Queen called Bohemian Rhapsody? It's a long song that begins with piano and vocals singing "Mama, just killed a man. Put a gun against his head, pulled my trigger now he's dead." Then it climbs up to a short a cappella (vocals only) operatic interlude (they use the word "fandango" which along with "Bohemian" reminds one of gypsies) before becoming arsekick raunchy (“Oooooh baby, gotta get out of here baby…”, etc.). Then it returns to the opening melody and ends with a dramatic whisper (“Anyway the wind blows…”).
Is that it?

Most likely an Abbey Road melody. Hopefully that helped. It really annoys me too when I hear a great song and don't know the name.
PS The Beatles do rock

I think you are thinking about the sun king medely, with sun king, mean mr mustard, polothene pam, she came in through the bathroom window, golden slumbers carry that weight and the end. It is on the Abbey Road Album/Cd which is fabulous, I recommend you buy and enjoy it.

Thats a tough one. There is a song in which they make reference to a couple of other songs. It's called Glass Onion.
I'm not sure that is what you are speaking of, though.
