just this morning i found out that one of my pet goldfish's tail (only half of it) was bitten off. it can still swim a bit though. i can see a bit of it's flesh and it's eyes turned off-colour . it's sides has some bruises too and i'm sure it's dying. what should i do? no doubt that the other goldfish in the tank has done this. they have been living peacefully together for more than a year now and how could something like this happen? i remember the same thing happened to my cousin's goldfish . why could have caused this sudden behaviour in goldfishes? by the way my goldfish and my cousin's are the slim kind not the podgy ones

One cause could be that you have too many fish in a tank that's too small. That will cause fish to pick on each other. Another cause is that the fish was weak from some sort of sickness which drops it's defences against the other fish. The best course of action would be to isolate the sick fish in another tank or something similar. Aquarium salt is very good at helping heal sick fish, so if you have some at hand or can get some at the pet store, it can be used in all freshwater environments whether your fish are sick or not. If your fishy does pull through, it's tail may or may not grow back. It depends on how close to the body it was severed. Not to worry though, one of my gold fish is still alive after 6 years of only a little piece of its tail left. Good Luck! Hope this helps

Take him out and put him in a separate tank filled with 50% of water from the original tank and 50% clean treated water.
He might not make it anyway due to the stress that these injuries would have caused.
Buy Melafix at the petshop. Melafix is a patented aquarium and pond product made from tea tree oil. It is promoted to heal fish with ulcers caused from Aeromonas bacteria. Here’s what the manufacturer says:
Antibacterial Remedy
Rapidly Repairs Damaged Fins
Heals Open Wounds and Ulcers

Seeking vetinary advice is few and far between sadly, there is a seriouse lack of vets around the world that actually will and can treat fish. You do need help and the fastest and most accurate help is with a goldfish board specializing in Goldies or Carp species. It is probably a Common, Comet or Shebunkin, single tail species. The large bellied types are often referred to as Fancies.

Try Koivet or better yet, GAB....

I think you are out of luck. Maybe try giving it oxygen? Take the other fish out and drop a battery in the bowl. Let it get a good shock then take it out. No, seriously, i would change the water and separate the two fish. If it stops swimming and looks like it just saw the light hold it and move it back and forth so as to it get water in its gills. If nothing else make sure it has its soul right, talk to it, make sure it isn't holding any grudges!

You may want to try a multipurpose medicine on the tank incase there is an illness. The fish like to pick on weaker and ill fish, then they too become ill. If the fish is going to dye there is really nothing you can do. seperating it may make it live longer but then you may have to keep it seperated until it does dye even if it gets better it will be weaker than the others and will get picked on again. I say treat for illness and keep an eye on the tank.

Koi should not be in a tank. they choose ponds. hazard is the oxygen diminished over night and affected the fish. flow away the clear out on 24/7, it oxygenates the water and eliminates waste. additionally if the tank is wisely cycled it eliminates ammonia. the superb ingredient you're able to do is take away the pleco to give up them from attempting get the slime off. additionally introduce greater oxygen to the tank by using yet another clear out or air pump. putting him in a separate, uncycled tank will basically stress him and make it worse. If he survives you will the two could desire to get an more desirable tank(one thousand gallons for each koi and seventy 5 gallons for goldfish), build a pond or discover somebody who has a brilliant pond to take it. different clever the koi will out advance the tank and the tank will stunt his enhance ensuing in dying.

Put your sick goldfish in a separate bowl, it won't need any pump or filter, goldfish can live in bowls with no circulation if you clean it every other day. Go to your pet store or Walmart and get some stress coat for your fish, follow the bottle directions and add to the bowl. He should be fine. Leave him in there for a couple months until his tail grows back and he is stronger. Good luck.
