Traditionally, it is possible to tell the age and health of a horse by looking at its teeth and mouth, and would have been done by someone who was about to purchase an animal. However, if someone is GIVEN a horse, the presumption is that he is better off than before he received the horse, and since he has not paid for the horse, he has gained no matter what the quality of the horse. Similarly, if you receive a "gift" - literally, or in terms of good luck - sometimes it's best not to question its quality, and just be happy you have come out ahead.

It's a very old saying when people used to exchange and barter horses much more than they do now.

You can tell the age of a horse by looking at their teeth. If someone gives you a horse as a gift, it would be considered very rude to look at the teeth to see if you were getting an old horse that had seen better days. You should just be thankful you got the gift, rather than being so picky. :) :)

It became a present in spite of the indisputable fact that the warriors were hidden interior. at the same time as all were dozing they emerged and conquered the city. you ought to continually look a present horse contained in the mouth because there'll better than probable be a fee to pay later that you would no longer opt for.

Am quoting from the site:

Originally said by St. Jerome in 400 A.D.

His exact words: "Never inspect the teeth of a gift horse."

The message conveyed is that a gift should be appreciated for the thought and spirit behind it, not according to its value.

Who is he? Look up here http://www.quotationspage.com/author.php?author=Saint+Jerome

There are some other quotes from him here as well!
