Teachers: How often do you call home to contact parents of high school students?

I call anytime I think it will help me understand why a student is not doing well in school academically or if I have concerns about health or other issues. As a parent, I wanted to have a chance to help my daughters do well in school. I want to give my students' parents that same opportunity. That doesn't mean I call all the time, but I do maintain contact by phone or e-mail when things aren't what I expect them to be and talking to the student first doesn't resolve the issue.

I am not a teacher but I am a parent of a high schooler and I have never been called, I have to call the school or go to the school when my child tells me about problems she is having either with other students or her teachers. Sending home a note is not the answer, the student can throw the letter away. One phone call can help solve a lot of problems.

I'm not a teacher, but having gone thru this so much with my own kids hope to help a bit. I really wish the schools WOULD call at this age! Don't send notes, unless a sig was required to stay out of detention we never saw them. Call if the kid is getting behind, you suspect something else could be going on (I never told my parents ANYTHING, and it was sometimes hard to get the boys to talk), but also call if they are doing really well. Doesn't have to be often, but even just once is a nice change. As parents, the only time we hear from the school is when they've done something!

As a teacher of many years I don't think I have ever called a students' home. If there is a discipline problem either admin or our SRO or guidance calls. I send home written things sometimes asking parents to set up a conference or the like.

The Detroit school district actually discourages any calls to the home. What if the student was to answer, then our system would consider that 'inapropriate contact'. Last thing I want is some 14 year old boy accusing me of lusting for him.

We actually ask for a day-time phone number to contact parents. We call in the mornings to make sure the absent students are accounted for. Parents of students who are caught cheating get a call as well. We also have an internet-based grading system that allows parents to check on students' grades and attendance whenever they like.

Yes, I am not a teacher but alot of my teachers called home for several reasons like the student's not doin his or her's home work, or not showing up to class stuff like that but it all depends what the situation really is!!!
