Thesis: Although opponents of stem cell research believe that
there are other avenues to treat patients with illnesses that don't
involve the use of embryonic stem cells, the truth is that the research on these cells will provide the information needed to cure some of our deadliest disorders such as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, heart disease, and many others, allowing many individuals to live more meaningful lives.

I love writing, far better than math. Your thesis should be your main argument for the paper. Are you for or against stem cell research? What is your argument/reason for your viewpoint? Thesis statements should be in the first paragraph, often the first sentence. Not knowing where your paper is headed makes it hard for me to think of one, but I can give you a different example. This is from something I did on mental health parity.......

Another year has come and gone, yet our elected officials continually choose to turn a blind eye to the need for true mental health parity reform that would give every American equal protection under the law and a chance at normalcy. (can't find the paper of course! Something along those lines.)

Stem cell research offers the potential to develop new treatments to ease suffering if we can overcome the resistance of pro-life extremists who value the life of an unviable pre-embryo over the needs of a living human being.

Stem cell research represents the ethical dilemma of science striving to advance human life by sacrificing its most vulnerable form: the pre-embryo that has the potential to become a new human being.

Those are a couple of different takes on a complex subject. Your thesis statement sets the stage for how you will expound on your research to support the particular perspective you are taking. Choose a perspective and be prepared to find evidence to support it as well as to answer the arguments posed by those with an opposing viewpoint.
