pretty sure its true. Smaller molecules can sometimes pass without using energy through diffusion and osmosis. Larger molecules though, need extra help sometimes, such as a pump or excretory vacuole. Plus, the hydrophobic insides of the phospholipid bilayer make it tough for large molecules to pass through without help
