If it is localized to the uterus and other female organs a hysterectomy will take care of this. Cervical cancer can spread to other areas of the body and may require radiation and/or chemotherapy. It just depends on what stage the cancer has progressed to.

A hysterectomy only removes the diseases cervix. It is often a good idea to get a second opinion with an Gyn oncologist.
Your sister will continue with vaginal vault smears this will show any reoccurrence of the cancer or it can show any abnormal cell changes that may occur later of the vaginal cuff or the vaginal walls.
She should incorporate self vulva exams with her monthly breast exams. Every woman should incorporate self vulva exams with self routine body screening. http://www.ivf.com/vse.html
Vulva disorders can arise after a hysterectomy due to dryness and age this disorder can contain HPV of the vulva.
My HPV infection was diagnosed at my one year post hysterectomy follow...my hysterectomy was not done for cervical issues...no history of abnormal Paps. My infection is of the vulva (VIN) and vaginal vault VaIN.
I wish your sister all good things in her recovery.

Tell her to get a second opinion. A lot of times, there is no need for a full hysterectomy.

The pathologist that examines the removed tissue will make sure there are not any tumor cells at the edge (margin) of the specimen. If it has spread beyond the uterus, they will probably do more surgery to make sure all of the cancer has been removed.

Cancer can be identified by characteristics. The doctors doing the surgery will know that they removed it all. Then they will send some of the good tissue removed to be examined and tested to verify independently, that it is all out.
