My friend says this means I have low self-esteem. I just say it's my word for unique, or for "dances to the beat of a different drum", or somesuch.

(Also tell me where I should have put this instead, if applicable.)

Some words have emotional baggage that automatically come with the word. Weird might be one of these. It might also be the correct word.

If you friend used the word "weird" to describe him or herself, then perhaps this would be a sign of low esteem for him or her. If you see nothing negative about using the word and do believe that it is accurate, then continue to use it.

"Weirdness" is all relative. Some people hide it while others flaunt it. Just be aware that the word does carry some emotional ties. I would hesitate to use it at a job interview or to the parent's of a friend (of either sex).

Psychology is as good a category as any for this Question.

For what it is worth, if I had to pick one word to describe myself, I would pick the word "Weird." (Perhaps followed by "Unique.")

Weird and normal are terms that describe conditions. However, these such terms are not applicable when describing the Human condition, human emotions or personality. There is no established norm, therefore there is no established level of weird. Society cannot determine it because of society's fractured nature. There are too many different, for instance, interest groups/lobbies in the government to establish regularity in opinion. You can't say someone's opinion is weird/normal, because it's their opinion. Because someone dresses different does that make them "not normal" or "weird"? Everyone has a "normal life" but what some people think is normal other people think is weird.

Do you care what your friend says? Weird usually means strange, or wired incorrectly, or different in an unpleasant way. Do you really believe yourself to be "unique". If so, is it just your behavior that is unique, or how you dress, or how you speak, or maybe how you think? Unique means one of a kind, is this what you find yourself, one of a kind? Or do you mean to say that you are different from those with whom you associate, but in terms of the world, you may not be all that different? How much of the world have you traveled to judge this uniqueness of yours?

The deeper aspect of saying one is "weird" is to disarm others who one fears may criticize one for something. It is a way to defend oneself, and as such... there is the implication that there is something that one is unsure about. Saying one is "weird" is not something one would say if one was secure with oneself.... is it?

One additional point... those who are truly unique rarely say they are because the uniueness speaks for itself.
Peace

Maybe you do have a bit of a self-esteem problem, if you think about it. For instance... why did you ask us where you should have put your question? People will criticize you enough in this lifetime.... no sense INVITING them to criticize you.

When you are around people, and you act a little goofy, silly, or whatever.... you don't need to tell them you're weird. Let them draw their own conclusions. If you want to comment on your own behavior, maybe you should say something more specific, such as: "I like to fool around." or "I think it's fun to be different." or "Just having a little fun." or "I'm a free spirit."

Better yet, if you don't have to... why draw attention to yourself in a negative way? Just have fun and let other people enjoy your free spirit.

Depends on why you are weird. Are you weird because all the other stereotypes are taken or do you truly not care what others think. Weirdness can be great if you're doing it for you and not as an act or to get people to notice / like you. Enjoy life on your terms and don't worry what other people make of your choices. Good luck with your weirdness.

So, whats wrong with being weird? Weird, crazy, goofy, strange, serious, dull, gay or straight. Whatever you are remember this line from the I.C.P. song We Belong....But the sum of us equals us all, think about that.

anyone who calls themself weird simply isn't but is just desperate to be different from the rest of the pack. it is the same as with kids who call themselves geeks. the fact that you label yourself as such takes away from it. to be called weird by other people is fine and dandy though.

only if you're lying.

if it doesn't bother you, it's no big deal.

it sounds like he wants to get you to sound more positive or something. Nothing wrong with that.

What you say about yourself can affect other people's views of you.

No, Weirdness is wonderful.
I certainly don't want to be 'normal' like everyone else.

it doesn't matter what people call you,
it's what you answer to.

ok maybe that doesn't apply so much, but I just love it. and I don't think it's wrong. don't let them make you doubt yourself.
