It would be my first trip to Haiti and my friends think it is a bad idea. I don't like resorts & enjoy hiking and exploring. I would like to hear from people who have actually been to Haiti recently.

Nope. My husband is Haitian. The country is full of economical and political strife. It's risky to go to begin with, and if you do low budget should be the LAST thing on your mind. I agree with your friends. It's a bad idea. You don't want to "explore" and get kidnapped. It is quite possible, and they will assume you have money since you are choosing to visit. Stay in an affluent area.

I have just spent 6 months in Haiti.
Most of the problems are in the Capital.
What do you call Budget? I think it would be difficult to pay less than $50 per night.
In the provinces the country is fairly safe , and towns like Jacmel , Port Salut , Jeremie , are worth visiting.
Haiti is an interesting place to visit.
Try to buy the book "Bonjour Blan"
