A few days to a couple weeks, depending on the extent and placement of the tear. An episiotomy can take longer, sometimes several months. But in either case, the stitches themselves should dissolve in 14 days at most.

Did the hospital or birthing center give you a peri bottle or sitz bath to take home? Both are great for easing discomfort. Fill the peri bottle with warm water and squirt it on the stitches while you pee to ease any stinging. A couple times a day, hand baby to papa or put her in a sling and sit on the sitz bath, again with warm water. I also found that wiping with witch hazel and putting Tucks pads on the stitches really helped.

I had stitches with both of my children and the pain subsided sometime within 3 weeks completely. But I felt a lot better within 2. It really depends on how big the tear was. Buy some sanitary pads and some TUCKS. The tucks are pre moistened when u buy them *u can get them at walmart, target, walgreens etc.* take those and put about 2-3 in your pad. change them out everytime u go to the restroom. also when u wipe use those instead of toilet paper and they will give more comfort. If the hospital didnt give u a soaking tray to sit in for your stitches then sit in the bathtub with very warm water for about 15-20 minutes 3 times a day. All of these things helped speed up my recovery process. Good Luck and Congratulations on your new baby!

About a month I had to get stitches to it was very uncomfortable but you can take a sitz bath or my mother in law bought me a sitz bath that yo place on the toilet and you fill with hot water it really works I also placed tucks pads on the pads they give you and on top of the tucks pads I put Vagisal It really made It feel better and Tylenol for the pain or if you need something stronger your Dr can write you something But the sitz bath I believe she bought it at Walgreen's.Well good luck hope you feel better.the pain will go away soon. about six weeks. did they give you a bottle to spray warm water on the stitches to keep them wet? If not, go to a drug store and get a squirt bottle, put warm water into it, and spray. Such relief. Also, they gave me some type of spray in the hospital, I'm sorry I can't remember what it is called though. I used this and it takes the sting out, hopefully someone else might remember. But keep the wound wet, that is the biggest help. Good luck!!

I had stitches and the hospital sent me home with Tucks pad and Dermoplast (a soothing numbing spray) As well as a sript for a pain killer. I didnt take the pain killers but the Tucks and Dermoplast were a life saver!! Each time you use the restroom they told me to clease with warm tap water and then pat dry and spray the dermoplast on. Then place the tucks pad in your underwear on the pads to keep the swelling down. I was ok with in a couple of weeks or so!
Good Luck and Congrats!!!!!!!

It will take about a month. Get some Dermoplast pain releiving spray. Also the hospital should have give you a small spray botttle to cleanse with after u use the bathroom. Take a warm bath every day. Ibuprofen (safe to take if breastfeeding) will help. These things helped me.

about two wks for me. it felt like two years though. never quite felt anything so unconfortable in my life. i think that was the most painful part of the whole thing. I was afraid to take the pain medicine the doc gave me, afraid it would knock me out and i was the only one to get up with my baby. just relax and get a comfy pillow to sit on, it will be tender for awhile

A couple of weeks. If you use tea tree oil in your bath it may speed up the healing process.
If you find that you feel like you are sitting on broken glass though, get checked for infection.

after they take the stitches out, that's when I stopped hurting. I had a c-section.
