i'll give you the answer, but i'm not giving the work...you need to know how to do that yourself...because i'm sure you are getting a test. x = 2

The trick...add or subtract from each side to get x all by itself

I'll show you how to work it out.

-14 = 5 + x - 21

subtract 5 from both sides, and add 21 to both sides

-14 - 5 + 21 = x + 5 - 5 - 21 + 21

the numerical terms on the rhs (right hand side) cancel out

-14 - 5 + 21 = x

do the math on the lhs (left hand side)
-14 - 5 + 21 => 2

therefore 2 = x

-14=5+x-21
+21 +21 cancel the -21 out by adding 21
7=5+x
-5 -5 subtract 5 from both sides so you can get x alone

2=x
