Yes she can, but only on her back, as using it near her tummy might bring on premature labour. I know you can use them before you go into labour because the midwives advise you to try putting on the machine to make sure it works and you can put it on properly before you actually need it. If in doubt though, she should check with her midwife. Not sure if TENS will help her with that sort of pain though, but it might be worth a try.

Yes, tens was actually invented for back pain i used it while i was in labour for both of my pregnancies and it was fantastic. all it is, is little electronic thingymies that feel like little vibrations its quite soothing and tell her she can also use it when she's in labour!
If the pain is very pad though she should see her doctor or midwife it could become serious, there's and illness that pregnant women can get and i forget what its called but its PSP or something.... anyway good luck and congrats to your friend
EDIT: tens does not have to be prescribed.. in fact i dont think you can get one on perscription you have to buy one or hire one.

There is nothing wrong with using a TENS machine while pregnant, i used mine throughout my pregnancy and labour, you can get them on rental from BOOTS and similiar places, they are not prescription only

There advertised on the tv for use in pregnancy and labour so id say they are lol. If your still worried ask your midwife 1st. Boots rent them, around £30 for 9 weeks but there around that price to buy so you may aswell just buy it and if you dont like it then dont use it. Same price as just renting anyway. Let us know if it works!

Tens are prescription machines. If the doctor prescribes one, then yes, she can. If the doctor doesn't, it's because he believes it won't do any good.

In Scotland we are told not to use one unless we are in labour.
Not really sure why, that just the rules.
