I think he has a point!

In communication/conversation, a lot is said with expressions rather than words and when you can't see expressions, it makes it difficult/awkward.

Whats the veil really for, other than protecting the face from Sand Storms in the Desert, or maybe hiding bruises???

Pride over religion is the real problem here - No God would EVER ask a person to dress a particular way to get into in his/its good graces. The Same way God has never actually asked that any Catholic Priest never have a family...

This is not technically a religious issue, they are just using religion to keep their cultural differences compulsory. What the face cover'ers have to realise is that our culture is different to theirs, and like theirs, has developed over a long period of time - several Muslim countries do not allow the drinking of Alcohol, however, one particular Christian Ritual would not be possible without it - If an issue as trivial as this is causing so much uproar peace is never going to happen...

I strongly believe that immigration should be followed by integration...people who have moved into the west should try and interweave with the existing society

Im a hindu, and we dont wear anything in particular....at first I agreed with Jack Straw's Statements....but then after much thinking, i wondered: what if Christian people were banned from wearing crosses? What if Hindu people were stopped from celebrating their colourful celebrations?

At the end of the day, I put myself inside THEIR shoes, and i didnt like where I was standing....

I guess we just have to accept that these manners are part of their personal life, and should not be meddled with...because this would just add fuel to the already existing fire

i have a copy of 'still to decide' by enoch powell.
powell singled out 'master' jack straw who at the time was head of the student union as a person not to be trusted.
when british politics reaches a point where the labour party seems to be divergent with powells hardline view then all of our civil liberties are at risk.
jack straws comments this week will affect integration more seriously than any piece of cloth.
we are on the brink of facism again and its high time that we stopped listening to the idiotic veiws of a few individuals.
personally i think straw is trying to curry favour with a view to the leadership and thinks that a few pseudo-racist rants do the trick.
a veil is not good enough for jack straw, maybe a gag would be more appropriate. or a noose.

It's not just the veils that prevent integration, it's the fact that that many immigrants just come over here for the easy ride and have absolutely no intention of integrating. Apart from integrating with the DSS that is. Oh and don't forget the free healthcare, and the rent free housing. A friend of mine has just been refused a Council house (they have a job and don't claim benefit), because an immigrant was given priority! Yet people are concerned about the use of veils?

If I was being treated by a female Muslim doctor, for example, I wouldn't want to be talking to a veil father than her face. In some cases you need to see the person's face to communicate with them. Talking to a veil would be really intimidating.

And I REALLY don't see what the hell is "immodest" about letting people see your face! Its not as if they're looking at your breasts or something!!! Face to face contact is a basic human need.

I Have just read through some of the previous answers and the amount of ignorant people on here astounds me !

1-Ask yourself this question why would any religion hide their face,Christians don't,Sikhs don't, Buddhists don't etc Only people with something to hide,Cover their faces
2- Afghanistan has NO oil !!
3- If you are a non Muslim you Cannot enter the city of Mecca, should we do the same with, say Only Catholics in Rome,or Jews in Jerusalem .
4- I listen to everybody going on about an illegal war in Iraq blah blah thousands of ton of bombs Blah blah innocent civilians etc
where were Your Protests when Saddam's Iraq "government " poisoned gassed ONE HUNDRED THOUSAND Kurds simply because they opposed him politically, although war is never the answer something HAD to be done He had ignored countless U.N resolutions,or should we have stood back until the death total reached 6 million like the bleeding hearts done in 1939-1945

For once i think Jack Straw has got it right and is speaking for a lot of us. Its not just muslim terrorist issues that hacks us off, its the smaller things that add to the bigger picture. These people need to understand that things like covering your face up when you are addressing someone in England is RUDE. This is our culture FACT. If they cant get used to it, refuse to get used to it, then there is a simple remedy - a direct oneway flight to a country that supports regular flouting of traditions! Whatever happened to 'when in Rome...?'

somewhat precise for elevating a controversy which may be too delicate for many to enhance. we could recover from this concern of being labeled a racist each and every time pointing out some thing that the liberal mom or father-reader does not like. fifty 3 out of fifty six may be a touch deceptive statistic interior of a inhabitants that has an extremely super muslim community - in spite of the undeniable fact that it nonetheless stands proud worryingly.

I totally agree with Mr straw
in this society when even motorcycle couriers, people in hoodies, baseball caps etc have to remove them because they mask their identitiy.
how can you possibly disguinish between any two people with thier faces pretty much covered up? and help them or answer their questions.
In my opinion its about time we stopped ***** footing around these people.
after all if we went to their country and tried to build a church .and opposed their laws for the sake of our religion how far would we get.
In sunmmary its confusing, in polite and in proper.
