On February 25, 1979, in a game against the rival New York Rangers, Potvin delivered one of his signature hip checks to Rangers center Ulf Nilsson; Nilsson suffered a broken ankle on the play which sidelined him for the season.

Rangers coach Fred Shero said of the hit, "It was a hard check, but you can't penalize a guy for hitting hard".[NY Times, 2/26/79]

Although the hit was legal, Rangers fans hated Potvin for it and created the Potvin Sucks! chant, which served as a response to Islanders fans' chant nineteen-forty (1940), for the year of the last Rangers cup before 1994. To this day, almost 20 years after Potvin retired, the "Potvin sucks" chant shows up at every Rangers home game regardless of whether or not they are playing the Islanders.

Potvin joked about the chants at the Islanders' 25th-anniversary Stanley Cup celebration, held in 2006.

in 1979 Potvin checked Ulf Nissan and broke his ankle - The said it was a legal hit! Since 1979 the rangers have chanted Potvin sucks - many ranger fans believe that injury cost them the cup. The islanders then came back chating 1940 - the last time the rangers won the cup - The had to stop in 1994. The Potvin chant still lives on with the Rangers!!!

Ha-ha, I posted this as an answer to the most hated NHL players just yesterday. Back in '79 or '80 the Rangers signed 2/3 of the best line in the world at the time...a pair of young Swedes who played with Bobby Hull in the WHA. They were Anders Hedberg and Ulf Nilsson and they were downright amazing. Within a year or so, Denis Potvin took out Nilsson's knee on a cheap hit and Nilsson was never the same...tried to come back twice I think. Years ago the MSG faithful used to chant "Beat your wife Potvin, beat your wife" after a charge of spousal abuse and "Buy a Porsche Potvin, buy a Porsche" after Flyers goalie Pelle Lindberg crashed his Porsche and died.

If you have access to the Howard Stern radio show on Sirius, this was just talked about today.
Howard went to the opening night Rangers game (last night) and Artie Lange told a story about the old Islander/Rangers rivalry, and how chants could break out at any time about Potvin beating his wife.

i didn't know that it went back to the '70s, i thought it was from the '94 playoffs when the rangers pulverized the islanders. it was great. :) felix potvin was the islanders' goalie and couldn't stop the puck to save his life.
