Alright, so I'm writing a novel. I currently have the entire thing outlined and the preface and first two chapters written. However, I wrote the preface in first person view and the rest in third person, all from the point of view of my main character. Is this acceptable or not?

I'm an experienced writer. I feel that doing this adds to the story. It makes sense. The preface is in present tense and very personal, while chapter one and two are in past tense. I feel I'm stronger writing in third person, but the preface seemed like it needed the added personality.

Also, I'll be sticking to third person aside from, maybe, the epilogue. Not quite sure yet. But the remainder of the book itself will be consistent with chapters one and two.

It sounds like you have some clear reasons for doing what you want to do, and it doesn't sound that far from the norm, so I would say it's acceptable.

The preface will be consistent within itself, as will be the later chapters.

It's hard to know for sure without reading it, but it sounds like it will be fine.

sure it works. i have read a book that switches from 3rd to 1st person, and the character who does the narrating switches. that book is a little confusing, but if your book makes sense, then its fine.

It's alright as long as the reader can tell between when it is the character talking and when it is you.

I believe that grammically it is incorrect, but authors are always bending rules, and your story will be unique and acceptable. Good luck!

If it flows well, do it. If you think it adds depth and dimension, do it.
