My psychiatrist has been telling me for quite some time that she thinks I may have bipolar disorder. I know its true but I hide it really well, I'm afraid if I admit to it they will lock me up in a mental ward. Its so much easier to say I just have panic attacks, cause most everyone has had a panic attack at least once.

I have bipolar disorder. When I was diagnosed, it was a relief for me. I was finally able to get on medication to control it. I take Lamictal for it and I swear it's like a miracle pill.

You will not be locked up for being bipolar, unless you happen to be a danger to yourself or someone else. And if that was the case, your psychiatist would have already had you locked up!

Don't feel like you have to tell everyone about it. It's really none of their business. My family knows and a few friends know. I'm not ashamed of it. It's not like I asked to have it, and I'm sure you didn't either. Bipolar disorder does sometimes carry a negative stigma with it, though. However, not everyone views it as such a negative thing. I mean, my longtime friends understand that it doesn't make me a psycho, but I'm not going to go up to someone new and say, "Hi, my name is Amy. I'm bipolar!!" That would probably scare most people away. Don't think you have to tell anyone who you're aren't close to, unless you feel comfortable with it. Like I said, it's none of their business.

I would recommend getting on some kind of medication for it, though. It can really make a world of difference. Don't be discouraged if you try a medication and it ends up not working. Not all medications for the same in everyone. It might take a few before you find the one that works. And in my experience, anti-depressants aren't going to work for bipolar. You will need a medication specifically for bipolar disorder, like Lamictal.

Bipolar disorder can not be hidden all the time. Get on some medicine that may help you; better to use medicine than be locked up as some crazy person unable to function.

Admitting it has no bearing on whether you get "locked up" or not. If you are sick enough, you will get committed to a hospital if you need to be. Taking charge of your illness (assuming your dr. is right) is the best way to prevent such a thing from happening. Do what you can to keep yourself healthy and happy by doing what the dr. recommends and taking medication if necessary.

Other than all of that I see no need to tell anyone else about it. It isn't their business at all. Sounds like what you need to do is admit it to yourself. Other than that, it is your business and yours only.

Try acting it out. Seriously, if you have bipolar disorder, just tell 'em. It's not like they'll be surprised; it will explain a lot I imagine.

Wait, I just reread you question. What's to tell before your shrink gets it figured out. If your shrink only "thinks" that you have bpd, then maybe you need a real shrink. Not kidding!

Hiding it like you're doing can only make it worse, due to the mental and emotional stress you're putting yourself through. It's nothing to be afraid of, and unless you have trouble with acting-out behaviour, you'll probably be OK.

Be careful who you tell. Once information is put out it can never be taken back. Tell only those who have shown they actually care about you.
