From what I know, it's illegal.
My dad went to Mexico not too long ago, leaving my brother and I alone.
I'm 17, almost 18, so I don't think it'd even be a big deal.
But he was still worried about getting charged with abandonment if anyone found out he left us, even for the weekend.
So all I'm basing this off of is from what my dad knows, but he usually knows about things along these lines.

It depends, can the kid drive to school or walk to school? How long are you going to be gone? Is there a back-up relative or neighbor to watch out for the kid?

As far as the law you are ok, but I think it strongly depends on the kid if they are responsible and can take care of her/himself.
Also as long as there are no other younger siblings to care for while you are out of the country.

I wouldn't. If they were seriously hurt or ill, who would get them help? It wouldn't look very good if the home was broken into and they were hurt.

I wouldn't because you never know what they might do when you're out of the country...
