Liberal is a very old term in politics. Liberals were once known as reformers in the 19th century in england and canada. Liberals were people who had freer opinions about class, wealth and the rights of the minorities (the french) than the other predominant political group the conservatives. In a sense the answer to your question is that they have liberated their political opinions in comparison to those who call themselves conservatives.

Isn't everyone that disagrees with Republicans a Liberal?
Maybe they just want to be able to voice their views and not be considered a idiot that hates America.
I am not a Liberal , but I am a Democrat and lately that is enough for Republicans to consider me a Liberal. A huge problem has started by everyone thinking their views are the only way.
As a Democrat I support a stronger military with pay and benefits they deserve.
I do not believe in abortion but no one has come up with a way to stop it. Because it can not be done.
I do not believe in jobs going over seas when there are plenty of Americans that can do it and support our economy.
I do not support Illegal Immigration. Why can a person form Mexico come over without a problem but a Cuban, African,or Chinese come and be deported in 48 hours when they are the real
refugees and face execution when sent back?We have laws just enforce them. Anyway why come here when or jobs are sent to
India?
I support prisons , but I also support GOOD educations for everyone no matter where you live to keep the children out of prison.
So that is what I support maybe we need to stop name calling and just listen to other peoples views and respect them even if we do not believe in them, then we might be able to get something done and find out we are not that different.
IF you are going to ask someone how they believe why do you find it nessary to turn around and insult them. If you didn't want to hear their answers don't ask the question

you guys don't know the liberal "party" (which to my knowledge, there is no liberal party in the U.S.) from a hole in the ground... and you constantly prove it every time you use the word in a sentence...
why don't you guys come up with ONE definition for the word before you start asking questions about it...
every other question that conservatives ask has a new meaning for it... in one it's hippies.. in the next it's those on welfare... in the next it's Hollywood... in the next it's the media... in the next it's college professors... in the next it's all democrats... in the next it's everyone who supports abortion... in the next it's everyone that supports gay marriage...
in fact, probably 75 percent of America falls into one of the many definitions of the word... to some degree or another...
so when you guys either get your terminology straight... and what you want it to mean...
then we can discuss the specifics of what the party does...
and tollerant does not mean "being nice"... geez, come on

You are welcome to disagree with this but you should read it, you might wonder why you said what you did as it is an insult, and completely wrong. From Wikipedia:
Liberalism is an ideology, philosophical view, and political tradition which holds that liberty is the primary political value.[1] Liberalism has its roots in the Western Enlightenment, but the term now encompasses a diversity of political thought.
Broadly speaking, contemporary liberalism emphasizes individual rights. It seeks a society characterized by freedom of thought for individuals, limitations on power, especially of government and religion, the rule of law, free public education, the free exchange of ideas, a market economy that supports relatively free private enterprise, and a transparent system of government in which the rights of all citizens are protected. [2] In modern society, liberals favor a liberal democracy with open and fair elections, where all citizens have equal rights by law and an equal opportunity to succeed[3].
Many liberals advocate a greater degree of government interference in the free market, often in the form of anti-discrimination laws, civil service examinations, universal education, and progressive taxation. This philosophy frequently extends to a belief that the government should provide for a degree of general welfare, including benefits for the unemployed, housing for the homeless, and medical care for the sick. Such publicly-funded initiatives and interferences in the market are rejected by modern advocates of classical liberalism, which emphasizes free private enterprise, individual property rights and freedom of contract; classical liberals hold that economic inequality, as arising naturally from competition in the free market, does not justify the violation of private property rights. However, modern advocates of classical liberalism do advocate a heavier taxation on the corporation, as opposed to the current trend of the burden of income tax resting on the shoulders of the individual worker, as did the early classical liberals.
Liberalism rejected many foundational assumptions which dominated most earlier theories of government, such as the Divine Right of Kings, hereditary status, and established religion. Fundamental human rights that all liberals support include the right to life, liberty, and property. Liberalism has its roots in the Western Enlightenment, but the term now encompasses a diversity of political thought, with adherents spanning a large part of the political spectrum.
A broader use of the term liberalism is in the context of liberal democracy (see also constitutionalism). In this sense of the word, it refers to a democracy in which the powers of government are limited and the rights of citizens are legally defined; this applies to nearly all Western democracies, and therefore is not solely associated with liberal parties.
