i would say that each animal has its own unique scent which is quickly introduced to the mother and she soon recognizes the baby also by the noise they make or the call that is also recognized by each

Sent and their instink(sorry for the spelling) makes them notice small detials in there young. thats why if anoughter animal gets it's sent on the baby and it is gone for a period of time the mother whont accpect it.

Their scent mostly. Which is why you NEVER touch baby deer in the wild. It changes their scent. They may look abandon, but they are not. And if you pet them it is a death sentence.

the smell of them maybe? or they problebly are different in little mays that we cant tell but the mom does.
