to town in one year. What was the population of the town before
the people moved there?

if 10%=120, then 10 x 120 should equal the population, which would be 1200....try and build an equation from that

The formula is
10 120
---- ------
100 x

You want to cross multiply > 120 x 100 = 12000
then divide by 10 > 1200 is the answer.

Let population of town before 120 people moved there = p
Let y=population of town now

y=p+120
p+120 (substitute for y) =.10 p +p
(multiply each side by .10) 10p+1200=p+10p
(subtract 10p from each side) p=1200

P = 120/10% = 120/(10/100) = 120*100/10
