I want to set up a webpage to help me with a project Im doing. I will be asking for donations to assist and I think/hope people will find it worthwhile and interesting. I will need a credit card link or ability to donate via credit card on my page but I have no idea how? Do I approach the actual companies? bank? what exactly.
Thank you to anyone who can help, I truley appreciate it :-)

The easy way: Open a pay pal account and follow the instructions to add a payment button to your site, which can be used to solicit donations. People can donate by either logging into their Pay Pal account or they can pay with a credit card without using a pay pal account.

The slightly less easier way: Open a credit card merchant account with a service like 2CO or Authorize.net. These include very good programmer references with ready to run code that you can simply cut and paste into your web site. The problem is that they restrict the kind of payments that you take, for example some merchants may not allow you to use their services to solicit donations.

Since you are asking for donations I recommend you go the Pay Pal route, but please do NOT use them as a bank. Either dump the money out of your pay pal account into your checking account, or ask for their VISA check card and spend the money ASAP.

If you can tolerate their skimming 2.9% and a $.30 transaction fee off the donations, Amazon Honor System and PayPal each offer a way to automate the process through a link off your web site. You don't have to go through the BS of setting up a merchant account with the bank and the two companies are big, trusted names.

If you are going to allow someone to put their credit card number on your site then you will need to have a secure site.

This menas you would need to purchase a security certificate to be setup by your host - you can ask your host if they have this or go to http://ww.verisign.com

Secure Certificates (SSL) are expensive.

You can choose other options such as paypal - and speak with paypal about how to get this setup on your site and the costs through them (it may be cheaper thorugh paypal - but then anyone wishing to donate would also have to signup with paypal)

I have built sites that accept credit cards including the one for the muscular dystrophy association

read up on ssl and verisign plus you will need to approach fair trading and the banks. also you may need an organization to do it, there is a lot of work and a lot of papers to sign before you can go online with it.

also lawyers maybe needed for it too.
good luck :)

Try enrolling in paypal.... Once you belong (most people use paypal accounts on-line anyway).... you can have people use charge cards.

Paypal has tools that help you get their logo on your page (showing different charge cards that paypal takes).
