Depends, some think it's a normal thing to do because their parents do the same thing; it could be from low self esteem so they feel they need to pounce on others to feel good; self-righteous indignation; some people do it as reverse psychology...yah know...if say your friends tell you you can't do a task because you're dumb you might do the opposite to prove them wrong (because they know your nature tends to be contrarian)....that's some of the possibilites anyway

Because there will always be sadistic, intolerable a **holes who pleasure themselves in the humiliation and suffering of others without a speck of conscience in them, guilt free while they sleep comfortably at night, not giving a damn about the lives of the people they’ve screwed up, and still not get punished for it. As painful as it is, this is the reality of the world we live in where nothing is fair, and that’s just the way it is. Although I still find it in my heart to do good and fear God, because we all know the inevitable, that our mortal life will end, and we’re going to answer for all the bad things we’ve done. People can get away with bad things in this world, but not in the life after, but if i was a bad-a** atheist, then I’ll just get right down to it and be mean and nasty to others since I can get away with having nothing to fear, and since I'm picking on someone weak.

It makes small minded people feel better.
Antics are different. When someone does something funny to instigate laughter that's different than just reading Star magazine because we want to see where everyone else went wrong so we can feel better about our sorry lives.

When we get picked on, we die a little inside, so we make fun of other people's misfortunes because it makes us feel better.
I kind of mean...but everyone's mean somehow.
