One of my dear family freinds used to put goldfish in his horse trouphs on his ranch. Goldfish get as big as thier inviorment and they can get big in horse touphs. Personaly I would rather clean out my horses water than put goldfish in it. Goldfish may eat algea but they still have to poop it out.

We used to add about 1/2 cup bleach to the water in the troughs each time we emptied and filled them. At that dilution it's not toxic, but really cuts down on the algae.

We did in our large round horse tank. It was like a 500 gallon tank and they do help to et some of the algie out of it.
They do not bother the horses at all. But if you live in a cold area you need to tkae them in in the winter.

Oh don't do that, the horse will suck it up and eat. And horses tend to eat hay and sweet or salt lick then drink water, that stuff can be harmful to fish.

yes fish are good in horses water tubs but i don't think gold fish, guppies are the best as they are small and don't mind stagnate water and breed fast and are cheap we use them in Australia all the time

we always kept gold fish and bull heads in our cow water tank.. and it kept the tank clean longer .keeps the algi down .. plus they are fun to watch.. they get bigger than a gold fish in a fish bowl.
I have had some gold fish that got to 6" long in the tank.

yeah sure, ranchers do this all the time. i work at a pet store in michigan we sell plecos (sucker fish) for people to use in the troughs to eat the algae. they work better than goldfish.
