The role of government today vs the 1800 is vastly different. In the 1800's the government was very small and had little interference in our lives. FDR did a lot to change it with income taxes, social security, and social programs that just keep growing and growing.

In the early 1800's the Federal government was pretty much limited to the functions enumerated in the constitution.

Prior to the Civil war the Federal Government started increasing its scope by raising tarifs on imported goods and using the revenue to promote industries within the U.S. such as steel making and railroads.

During the Civil War the Federal Government expanded again and even imposed an income tax (strictly forbidden by the constiution). The tax was found unconstitutional and removed.

Around the turn of the 19th century the Consitiution was amended to allow a direct tax (income tax). Also it was amended to allow the popular election of State Senators.

Now the Federal government is involved in almost every aspect of your life. From the labeling on products to buy, to what you can watch on TV, what gas mileage your car must have, and even how much water your toilet uses per flush. It is now totally unbounded by the Constitution.

In my honest opinion, the government is suppose to be a general body of common people who ensure the land in which we live is orderly and productive.

Somewhere between 1890-1960 it became a makeup of crooks and homosexuals that are rich and attach strings to common people, like puppets, to do any and everything they want.

I truely believe the primary role of any Government is to protect it's citizens. Believing this, I feel our Government has overstepped it's boundries in many ways, such as abortion issues, gay issues, etc.
