Ear-piercing or nose piercing is the remnant of male chauvinism. The wearing of nose ring was an indication that the girl is married while ear-piercing was common.Have you seen animals like bulls whose noses are pierced and a rope taken through it the ends of which are held by the driver. By pulling or letting it loose he directs the bull how to drive the cart or the plough. The nose-piercing in women is no better. The Indian historian V.K.Rajwade has referred to a similar ancient practice in humans to controls the wives of the master. This lady invariably happened to be the father of the master. Hence the instinctive dislike of Indian girls toward their mothers-in-Laws.The
association of the nose piercing as an aid to personal decoration
was a later sublimation of this slave practice. Here also the size of the nose-rings declared the status of the husband and there hae been cases where of developing nose tears on this account. In fact the entire practice of loading women with jewellery which women have now assimmilated to themselves are remnants of male chauvinistic practices. As I said the wearing of nose rings declared the marital status. Widows are not permitted to wear nose rings. The ear-piercing was so widely prevalent in India among the Hindus that it became a religious sign. The ear-piercing is normally done when the child is still an infant and is justified by saying that it acts as an antidote against rickets among children. The Muslim invaders did not pierce their ears and therefore, non-pierces years became a sign of a non-Hindu though only a practice having no scriptural significance. The practiie of circumcision was peculiar to Muslims and became an identifying sign for them in India. The male chauvisinstic aspect of ear-piercing is seen in the practice of only males piercing their ears on the top portion and wearing an ornament known as 'bhigbali' which women could not do. Now of course wearing of jewellery and getting oneself pierces in various parts of the body(including the naval) has become fashion statements. My younger daughter-in-law who is a staunch Communist rejects these practices.Against the women's craving for ornaments she is the one who has never asked for them and even refused to wear what were there. Slowly but surely this practice of not-wearing ornaments is catching up among young girls.

I've never heard of it having a religious element. So far as I know it's done for purely aesthetic purposes.
