It's usually inherited.
Mine dates back to my great grandmother. We are in the south, which I believe has more stock in them. I grew up being taught to sleep under a new quilt and you will have good dreams, but not to sleep with your shoes underneath the bed or you would have bad dreams.
Of course there's the old black cat crossing the road in front of you saying. You have to "X" it out on your windshield to erase the bad luck that it brings on you.
New Orleans is probably the most superstitious area in the south, but we are all that way to one extent or the other.

Becasue it's out of the ordinary. I don't buy into a lot of superstitions, but I have to admit that if a black cat crosses my path- I get a little nervous. I think that if you hear something enough, it's accepted as the norm. I don't even know what is suppose to happen if you walk under a ladder- but I know not to do it.

superstitions are based on rules. Humans do not like the fact that things don't run on systems, therefore all the superstitions are simple systems the maintaining what we know so we know what will happen next. Humans like systems so much, that it's become part of religion. God hates that. Things were put on earth to be random, and no one likes randomness, so they try to control their surroundings, making them depressed b/c they can't except themselves for what they are, so they choose to make rules that free them from their depression!
