First of all, let me correct a misconception that e-money has which a lot of people share. Each election, each state has TWO electoral colleges, not just one. One for each party. It is the popular election of the state that determines which electoral college will represent that state. So it is not a matter of the electoral college voting for the candidate of their party. It is a matter of the people of the state choosing a particular party.
The reason for the electoral college is to prevent mob-rule. IF the elections were purely by popular vote, then all the decisions for the entire country would be made by the New England states and California. Candidates would never visit the Midwest or the south. Those regions have very real issues and problems that need legislative and executive attention, but would never be addressed because their votes would not count.
The people who whine about the electoral college are generally uninformed, under educated and simply venting their frustrations.

For much the same reason that the Supreme Court is not elected, so that they will make the right choice regardless of the will of the people. Electoral Collleges were used by ancient cultures like the visigoths and also the early Christian church.

Because when the US Constitution was written 220 years ago, it would have been too hard to accurately count the total popular vote of the loosely confederated nation that was the United States. So instead they set up a United Nations - style government where states, instead of people, vote for the President. By now we are long overdue to change the system and choose presidents by national popular vote.

This would be a good question for EVERYONE to send to their congressmen and senators. If enough people did, MAYBE they would change this out dated law.
