I am a special ed teacher that provides services for very young children in their homes. One child I have been assigned to lives in the projects. His family seems really nice and normal, but of course that doesn't say much these days. But, the whole fact that they live in the projects is pretty creepy to me and since I'll be going there every day for 2 hours, I would like to know if the projects are really as dangerous as people say. I will only be going during the late morning/early afternoon hours. Should I feel better knowing that there are cops in there at all times? My supervisor said if I feel really uncomfortable about it that I can back out. But, I am full time and I just started working a month ago, and I don't want to have my administrators think I'm a slacker. Honestly, I went today and it wasn't bad at all, but I was afraid. However, I think that is because of my previous conceptions of the projects. I need to know what people think!?

It's not wrong to be afraid to go into the projects. Just look at the statistics. It's wrong to be afraid of only black people or only Hispanic people etc. Always be nice, don't avoid eye contact (if you own a gun carry it - or even mace) if someone approaches you follow your instinct and always make sure you carry your cell phone and make sure someone you trust knows that you are headed in and headed out. Don't don't don't carry more that $6 dollars with you at any point in time and if some one wants your money - give it to them - your life is worth more than $6.

there is nothing wrong with not wanting to put yourself in danger. I have never lived in a project but I can tell you l live in a low income area and the crime is really bad. I can only imagine it would be worse in a housing project. Most of those kids are born out of wedlock and grow up without proper direction and get involved in crime at a young age.

You never mentioned where the projects were located..
I lived in the D street and B street projects of south boston.. and yes they can be rough.....I could tell you some storys but it seems like you are already a little scared...... I dont think that you have much to worry about as long as you carry yourself with confidence.....be aware of your surroundings... if some one seems to be paying you to much attention pull out your cell phone....... and walk to a place that you feel safe.... I could go on and on......Peace

Did you choose this profession because you wanted to help kids? If so, this child needs you. He needs you to be consistent. A lot of underpriveledged kids don't have anyone consistent in their lives that they can depend on to be there for them. That project is full of kids like him. Don't be so judgemental. Everyone who lives in the ghetto isn't violent and ignorant. You said yourself that his family seems nice. Do the right thing and keep going. This kid needs you. Peace.

I think you will be fine. Just keep you r car doors locked and don't look around just walk to the house and keep to yourself. If you are still afraid then carry a weapon.

Its okay to be afraid and perfectly normal. But I wouldn't be too concerned about it since you seem to be going during the mid-day where crimes don't normally happen. Most crimes happen late day and at night so I wouldn't be too concerned about it.

you are going during the day, so don't be worried, just keep your car locked and valuables out of sight (including stereo if you can). Just be respectful and no harm will come to you

I think you sound very classist and possibly even racist. Just because people are poor doesn't make them criminals. You've totally bought into the media hype and society's criminalization of people in poverty.

Here you have the opportunity to fight poverty with education and love, and you're going to back out?! If you did, how could you stand yourself afterwards?
