The length of segment AB is 2 7/8 in. A ruler is positioned next to segment AB so that point A corresponds to 4 3/16 in. Find two ruler numbers that could correspond to point B.

CAN ANYONE HELP ME WITH THIS PROBLEM????

Easy, you either add 2 7/8 or subtract 2 7/8 from the ruler point at 4 3/16. Those are the two numbers.

Adding:
4 3/16 + 2 7/8

Convert to a common denominator:
4 3/16 + 2 14/16

Add:
6 17/16

But then you have an improper fraction, so the final answer is:
7 1/16

Subtracting:
4 3/16 - 2 7/8

Convert to a common denominator:
4 3/16 - 2 14/16

Borrow:
3 19/16 - 2 14/16

Subtract:
1 5/16

(Note: you can also just convert these all to improper fractions to begin with, then back to mixed fractions and get the same answers.)

Adding:
4 3/16 + 2 7/8

Improper fractions:
67/16 + 23/8

Common denominators:
67/16 + 46/16

Add:
113/16

Mixed fraction:
7 1/16

Subtracting:
4 3/16 - 2 7/8

Mixed fractions, with common denominators:
67/16 - 46/16

Subtract:
21/16

Convert to mixed fraction:
1 5/16

Either way, the two points are 1 5/16 and 7 1/16

OKAY

First some assumptions...

Assume "A" is on the left, and "B" is on the right.

Assume the Ruler is marked off in numbers that get
higher from Left to Right.

Then Point "A" is at 4 3/16 on the Ruler.

And, Point "B" is 2 7/8 inches farther away from that.

So, 4 3/16 + 2 14/16 = 6 17/16, or 7 1/16

Answer = "B" is at the point 7 1/16 Inches on the Ruler.

The ruler point 4-3/16 rests along side the start or end of the segment that is 2-7/8 long. The other end of the segment (point B) is either going to be at the length of the segment plus 4-3/16, or 4-3/16 less the length of the seqment.
