Is there an easy way to get the black crud off of the burner grates for a gas stove?

place them in a card board box and spray with oven cleaner.

if you can, heat your home oven to 100 degrees and place the grates in there for about 20 minutes. After they have warmed up take them out side and drentch them with EZ Off oven cleaner. Be careful not to get the spray on you or inhale it, it will steam up when it hits the grates so be up wind from it. If and only if you dont have an alley to do this in, try a garage floor or side walk. You might need to place an old towel under the grates because you'll leave a stain from the grease.
I also use a power washer when I get the nerve to pull another tool out to clean the inside of the stove...Good Luck

Use oven cleaner and the recommended wait time. Make sure you use protective gloves & eyewear, and stor the grates in a safe place while waiting for the cleaner to work. You may need two or more applications. Make sure also that you rinse them thoroughly using large quantities of water to dilute the remaining cleaner to "safe" concentrations.

i put mine in the kitchen sink and spray them with oven cleaner and let them sit for awhile then i wipe them clean and if not all of the crud comes off i use a sos pad to get the rest off..

EASY-OFF like the name say's but do yourself a favor and buy 4 cans and a wire brush.

Steel wool, or a wire brush (similar to that used on BBQ's only smaller). Just scrub while it is dry.
