Is Jack Straw right to share his opinion? Being that he is a former Foreign Secretary!? (Sarcasm included). Is everyone is right to an opinion and to share it?

He said it was because it affects communication.... other religious artefacts do not noticably affect communication (I think).

If you *allow* people to wear whatever they want in the name of religion, where does it end?

Yes i think Jack Straw is right to state his opinion on this issue!...It seems no one can say anything anymore in fear of being classed as being racist, i think he did right and others should follow suit...i think it's ridiculous that people are making such a fuss about this, people should have spoken up waaaaaaaay before this about it, i do agree that Jack Straw has a valid point...I mean..they ban teens from wearing hoodies don't they?..Who wants to talk to someone when u can't see their face, u NEED to be able to see their face to comminicate with them...I saw a woman (i ermmmmmm think as i couldn't see) wearing their full head gear, she was driving a car and almost crashed because she couldnt see as she looked over her shoulder...They should be banned on a matter of health and safety issues alone...not to mention when shopping in stores....they could get out of the store with a whole heap of goodies under those gowns they all wear...would THEY be allowed to be searched? I think i migh start up my own religion and wear somthing as ridiculous and when questioned i'll just say...how dare you! i have my OWN rules, i don't abide by yours..........Anyway..i think you get the message... :-)

YES HE IS. If you want to wear a headscarve that cover your entire face, the MAIN impression people will have on you is that you don't look very friendly. People will also feel you are trying to cut yourself off from society. You can deny all this and claim you have a right, but this is how people will feel.
Anyway, honourable and noble British people (non Whites included) like broad minded and open people (open in the sense of being bold and showing who you are).
It is very disheartening to speak to people who hide behind something instead of coming out in the open to speak. Hiding behind a veil makes the other party feel you are like that. In fact, back in the olden days, YOU CAN EVEN BE CONSIDERED VERY RUDE!!
To call a person racist or insensitive just because he made such a remark is ridiculous.

Never ever be afraid to talk about any subject in the U.K.
The Lefties like to shout anybody down who doesnt agree with their views.I cant stand Jack Straw but he can say whatever he likes as the U.K aint a dictatorship! He also has a valid point.
I would consider it extremly rude if a muslim woman would talk to me wearing a headscarf.
But on the other hand if I was in another country like Iran it wouldnt be such a problem to me as I respect other peoples cultures.
You see where I'm going with this?
oh good.

Who is afraid to debate this? I'm not. If people want to wear headscarves, fine.
I wasn't aware that Jack Straw offered an opinion on the wearing of headscarves. He did, however, say that he asks those wearing veils if they would remove them while they talk.
Everyone is entitled to an opinion. They are not entitled to share it.
Old saying "Opinions are like arseholes - everyone has one". It's just that some people's arseholes are so disgusting that they should never be aired publicly. Same with opinions.

It is a question that excites interest even among the muslim community. There are those within that community who are for-and those who are against-the veil.
It is habit that is foreign to us, and we have come to look upon it as evidence of an increasing inflow of an alien culture.
We perceive this to be a culture that is generally unwilling to meld itself into its host country.
We have come to believe they are struggling to enforce that culture and its way of life upon the rest of us.

We can't debate anything that might offend anyone of a different culture, religion or group . White English Christians are fair game and you can say what you like to denigrate them, just as long as you don't offend the Islamonazis.
I hope aliasasim is not threatening us with his rant.Don't go there .

Probably because the PC brigade would be up in arms over it.
I say "When in Rome, do as the Romans do"
Our girls have to cover up when they visit certain countries, not consume alchohol, obey the laws / rules etc.
As the UK is supposed to be "Christian", anyone staying / visiting should toe the line...
I'll get my tin hat.....

Yes he is & I think it is pretty obvious that people are afraid to share their opinions in case they are called racist or they cause a furore like this story has
Thoses headscarves are a sign of oppression & women in this country are not oppressed!
