Here's a way to do this in your head!
First look at the number 12. It is made up of a 10 and a 2
Now multiply the 46 by the 10. You can do that in your head. All you do is add a zero so 46 x 10 is 460. Remember that number.
Next multiply the 46 by the 2. That's easy. You can just add 46 and 46. That's 92.
Remember that 460? Add 460 and 92. That's.........552.
So your answer is 552.

--------------------1
--------------------46
------------------x12
-------------------------
--------------------92
------------------46
-------------------------
------------------552
-------------------------
-------------------------
First you take the ones place of the 12, the 2 and mulitply it by each number, 2 times 6 equals 12, and 2 times 4 equals eight plus the 1 that you carried, so that is nine. For the tens place of the 12, the 1, you write the second line starting under the number you are using, the 1. 1 times 6 equals 6, write that under the nine of the 92, 1 times 4 equals 4, that goes in front of the 6. Now add the 92 and the 46 together. Remember that there is a blank space behind the 46 and in front of the 92, treat those as a zero, even write them there if it'll help you remember. So it would be, 2+0 equals 2, 6+9 equals 15 carry the one above the blank area in front of the 9, and 4+0 plus the 1 you carried equals 5. Your answer is 552.
A lot of people gave you good short cuts, and they DO work, but if you are doing homework or taking tests, the teacher will require that you write it out this way. I showed the format above, ignore the extra lines to the side though, I had to use those to get it to align properly. Good Luck.

Can you multiply 46 by 2? Can you multiply 46 by 10? If so do it then add them. Why does this work do you ask? Because multiplication is a series of additions. 2+2+2+2+2+2=12 is the same as 2 x 6times. So if you say you want to multiply 2 two times then add it to what you get if you multiply it four times, it's the same as multiplying it 6 times. Same thing with 46 by 12.
So the big idea with long multiplication is to remember what place the digit you're using holds in the number. 2516 by 431 would be the same as doing this:
2516 x 1 plus
2516 x 30 plus
2516 x 400.
Hope this helps.

...46
x 12
--------
6 x 2 = 12
get the 2 and put it under the original 2 so it looks like this
...46
x 12
---------
.....2
remember the 1
now 4 times 2 = 8
add the 1 to the 8 = 9
put the 9 before the 2 so its
..46
x12
--------
..92
then you do 46 x 1, which is 46 BUT this time u add a 0 at the end so now it looks like this......
..46
x12
---------
..92
460
-----------
552
the answer is 552 cuz i added those 2 numbers together.......

x 12
2 x 6 is 12
carry the l
2 x 4 is 8 + 1 + 9
This is 92
The move one space to the left
1 x 6 is 6
1 x 4 is 4
This is 46
So.
92
46
Add this two together
This equals 552
