To get better contrast...They wore the heavy white makeup so to see the lips better you need a strong contrast.

well, since their were no voice overs, people would develop a skill of reading lips. and with black lipstick was easier to see the lips form the next word for the anxious movie go-er.

Because red didn't translate as red on the black & white film...it looked muddy and brownish.
