That the USA is about to enter a totalitarian state?
I mean our constitutional rights are being chipped away, and police are allowed to overstep their boundries to catch crime, but most people are okay with it?
Am I missing something or are we handing away our lives to what we hoped would never happen to this country?

no one, i would rather have freedom! the freedoms guaranteed to us! If i remember right Ben Franklin said that those who sacrifice freedom in the name of safty deserve neither safty or freedom!

Karen, your use of emotional appeal is logical fallacy, how can you compare every little misdemeaner violated to something so atrocious?
Emotional appeal is used all the time to persaude the public to vote a certain way....

The slippery slope never seems like a slope at first. Instead, it seems like a very rational solution to a new problem. Suddenly we are about 10 feet underwater and the only solution is violently fighting for life.

The point people are trying to make when they talk about our rights being chipped away is, well... the patriot act is a prime example. in article 215 or 213 something like that it said that the president can hold any one he deemed to be a threat indefinitely. it did not specify the threat. so he could hold a political opponent indefinitely because he fond him to be a threat. do u see where this could lead? not that the currant president would do such a thing but future presidents may. or habius corpus, your right to a fair trial and having an attorney present. It again never specified who the "Threat" was. so armed with the knowledge that the president in his first term said that all union organizations could pose a terrorist threat. since i am a union member would i fall under this "threat" profile? even tho i was born and raised in America and am a proud patriotic American. the Republicans are so down on the ACLU. and all the ACLU is trying to do is protect your freedom for now and in the future.

Don't be ridiculous. The USA was founded on freedom, it's why we exist. Our founding fathers would not have left england if we didn't care. They chip away our rights because they think that overall, in the end, it will protect us, and save lives. If you had the choice of total freedom, or to have someone looking out for you and protecting your safety, which would you choose? What would you do in their shoes? If you were a parent and you could either let your child run free and hurt himself or hold him so he would be safe until he got home, what would you do? Any responsible parent knows the only answer to this. and deep in your heart, I know you do too.

I agree with you totally, most people don't pay attention, but we are losing freedoms. The new bill congresssigned into power does not differentiatebetween who can be named as an enemy combatant. Americans can now be held indefinitely with no trial, no charges, no legal representation.

Disagree and yes you are missing something, when was the last time you personally had a police officer over step his boundaries while you were committing a crime? What constitutional right have you personally lost? All these people who cry foul , can not give one instance that they have personally had their rights infringed on. Our constitution was written for our benefit as American citizens , it does not apply to terrorists or illegal immigrants. Being native has it's benefits.

I don't believe the US is becoming a totalitarian state anytime soon, but we're a lot closer than we used to be--or should be.
