In which types of goverment do ordinary citizens take part in decisions?

direct democracy, US has a representative democracy (the senators, and state representatives, etc) u see direct in like the tribes of africa and stuff like that

In Switzerland it is a practice to have referendums before passing important laws. I'm not sure how unweildy that would be here.
However in any democratic government, ordinary citizens can sign petitions, write, phone or email their politicians, thus influencing them in their decisions.
