My old desktop doesn't have a dvd burner in it and has a lot of data to be transfered. I wish to keep using the old desk top with the same data as the new laptop

You can usually buy a cord called a Fire-wire to transfer your entire hard drive to another computer. This may take several hours however, but it gets EVERY single thing you had on the hard drive, even preferences and settings. However, if you have used a lot of your hard drive on the old computer, it may not all fit on your laptop. Good luck, and have fun with the computer.

Assuming you only want to transfer your data from one com to the other your best option will be burning it to DVD or CD .If not an external hard drive that you can use for both and you can carry around with you all the time and are not just limited to your computers you can transfer info to any other computer you connect the drive to.

Two ways:

One would be to use your network. If you have a router (wireless or otherwise) you can sahre the folder(s) on your old compy. Find them on your new lappy by using the Start > My Network Places. Should be able to see the compy's shared files.

Two, get a "crossover" ethernet cable. Hook up your lappy to your compy via the ethernet ports and copy the files over the same way as above, with the Network Places window.

the best way is to buy a 2.5" hard drive and put it in a portable 2.5" usb hard drive casing and connect to your desktop computer and copy the data into it.

then after that, connect the portable hard drive to your laptop as and when needed.

cheers!
